"The steel sector in India is more than a century old, and contributes significantly to the economic development of the country due to rising demand by sectors such as infrastructure, construction, automobiles and a host of manufacturing and processing industries .Consumption of steel is an important determinant of the socio-economic development of the country. India is the fourth largest producer of crude steel and third largest consumer of steel. India is the largest producer of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in the world. Around 0.5 million nos. of employees are engaged in Iron and Steel Industry. This is likely to go upto 1.5 million nos. (Direct) by 2030, when the installed capacity reaches at 300 mt. from the current level of 104 mt "

About Indian Iron and Steel Sector Skill Council

"The Indian Iron & Steel Sector Skill Council (II&SSSC), is an industry (Iron & Steel, Rerolling, Sponge Iron units, Ferro Alloys, Steel Construction and Welding) driven non-profit company limited by Guarantee, registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1956.The company is promoted by Institute for Steel Development & Growth (INSDAG) and Bengal Chambers of Commerce & Industry (BCC&I) and mandated under National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). The Governing Committee of the Council includes major Iron & Steel companies, Iron & Steel and related associations, Indian Institute of Welding etc.

II&SSSC is committed to develop world class skilled manpower for the seamless supply of skilled workforce fro the Iron & Steel Industry so that the industry can enhance productivity and profitability.

IISSSC is expected:

  • To create a dynamic Labor Market Information System (LMIS) to keep track of skill gap in iron and steel industry, covering the various job roles in steel and related plants.
  • To Develop National Occupational Standards for the sector.
  • To facilitate development of high quality content.
  • To create a bank of quality faculty by Train the Trainers Program and to build accreditation and certification mechanism. "
